๐Ÿ”น 1. What is Matter?

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. ๐Ÿ“ฆ⚖️

Everything around us is made of matter — air, water, food, clothes, even our body! ๐ŸŒฌ️๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘š๐Ÿง

๐Ÿ”น 2. Characteristics of Particles of Matter

๐Ÿงฌ Matter is made up of tiny particles.

⚡ Particles are continuously moving — they have kinetic energy (energy of motion).

o ๐Ÿ”ฅ More heat = more movement = more kinetic energy.

๐Ÿงฒ Particles attract each other (inter-particle forces).

๐Ÿ“ There is space between particles (inter-particle spaces).

๐Ÿง  They also have potential energy due to attraction — stronger forces = higher potential energy (especially in solids).

๐Ÿ”น 3. States of Matter

๐ŸงŠ Solid:

o Definite shape ๐ŸŸซ and volume ๐Ÿ“ฆ

o Particles tightly packed ๐Ÿงฒ๐Ÿงฒ๐Ÿงฒ

๐Ÿ’ง Liquid:

o No fixed shape, takes container’s shape ๐Ÿฅค

o Fixed volume

o Particles loosely packed ๐Ÿ”„

๐ŸŒซ️ Gas:

o No fixed shape or volume ๐Ÿ’จ

o Particles move freely and are far apart ↔️

๐Ÿ”น 4. Interconversion of States of Matter

Matter can change states by changing temperature or pressure ๐Ÿ”„๐ŸŒก️⏬

o ๐ŸงŠ➡️๐Ÿ’ง Melting: Solid → Liquid

o ๐Ÿ’ง➡️๐ŸงŠ Freezing: Liquid → Solid

o ๐Ÿ’ง➡️๐ŸŒซ️ Vaporization: Liquid → Gas

o ๐ŸŒซ️➡️๐Ÿ’ง Condensation: Gas → Liquid

o ๐ŸงŠ➡️๐ŸŒซ️ or ๐ŸŒซ️➡️๐ŸงŠ Sublimation: Solid ↔️ Gas (e.g., camphor, dry ice)

๐Ÿ”น 5. Evaporation

๐Ÿ’ง➡️๐ŸŒซ️ Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into gas at temperatures below boiling point.

✅ Factors affecting evaporation:

o ๐Ÿ“ Surface area ↑ → Evaporation ↑

o ๐ŸŒก️ Temperature ↑ → Evaporation ↑

o ๐Ÿ’จ Wind speed ↑ → Evaporation ↑

o ๐Ÿ’ฆ Humidity ↓ → Evaporation ↑

๐Ÿ”น 6. Cooling Effect of Evaporation

๐ŸŒฌ️๐Ÿ’ง Evaporation causes cooling because the particles absorb heat from surroundings to convert into vapour.

o (e.g., sweat evaporating cools the body ๐Ÿ˜“➡️❄️)

๐Ÿ”น 7. Latent Heat

๐Ÿ”ฅ Latent heat is the energy absorbed or released during a change of state without changing temperature.

o ๐ŸงŠ➡️๐Ÿ’ง Latent heat of fusion (solid to liquid)

o ๐Ÿ’ง➡️๐ŸŒซ️ Latent heat of vaporization (liquid to gas)

๐Ÿ”น 8. Boiling vs. Evaporation

Feature         ๐Ÿ”ฅ Boiling                 ๐ŸŒฌ️ Evaporation

Temperature At boiling point only At all temperatures

Location         Throughout the liquid Only at the surface

Speed         Fast                                 Slow

Heat source Required                         May not be direct
