๐น 1. What is Matter?
• Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. ๐ฆ⚖️
• Everything around us is made of matter — air, water, food, clothes, even our body! ๐ฌ️๐ง๐๐ง

๐น 2. Characteristics of Particles of Matter
• ๐งฌ Matter is made up of tiny particles.
• ⚡ Particles are continuously moving — they have kinetic energy (energy of motion).
o ๐ฅ More heat = more movement = more kinetic energy.
• ๐งฒ Particles attract each other (inter-particle forces).
• ๐ There is space between particles (inter-particle spaces).
• ๐ง They also have potential energy due to attraction — stronger forces = higher potential energy (especially in solids).

๐น 3. States of Matter
• ๐ง Solid:
o Definite shape ๐ซ and volume ๐ฆ
o Particles tightly packed ๐งฒ๐งฒ๐งฒ
• ๐ง Liquid:
o No fixed shape, takes container’s shape ๐ฅค
o Fixed volume
o Particles loosely packed ๐
• ๐ซ️ Gas:
o No fixed shape or volume ๐จ
o Particles move freely and are far apart ↔️

๐น 4. Interconversion of States of Matter
• Matter can change states by changing temperature or pressure ๐๐ก️⏬
o ๐ง➡️๐ง Melting: Solid → Liquid
o ๐ง➡️๐ง Freezing: Liquid → Solid
o ๐ง➡️๐ซ️ Vaporization: Liquid → Gas
o ๐ซ️➡️๐ง Condensation: Gas → Liquid
o ๐ง➡️๐ซ️ or ๐ซ️➡️๐ง Sublimation: Solid ↔️ Gas (e.g., camphor, dry ice)

๐น 5. Evaporation
• ๐ง➡️๐ซ️ Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into gas at temperatures below boiling point.
• ✅ Factors affecting evaporation:
o ๐ Surface area ↑ → Evaporation ↑
o ๐ก️ Temperature ↑ → Evaporation ↑
o ๐จ Wind speed ↑ → Evaporation ↑
o ๐ฆ Humidity ↓ → Evaporation ↑

๐น 6. Cooling Effect of Evaporation
• ๐ฌ️๐ง Evaporation causes cooling because the particles absorb heat from surroundings to convert into vapour.
o (e.g., sweat evaporating cools the body ๐➡️❄️)

๐น 7. Latent Heat
• ๐ฅ Latent heat is the energy absorbed or released during a change of state without changing temperature.
o ๐ง➡️๐ง Latent heat of fusion (solid to liquid)
o ๐ง➡️๐ซ️ Latent heat of vaporization (liquid to gas)

๐น 8. Boiling vs. Evaporation
Feature ๐ฅ Boiling ๐ฌ️ Evaporation
Temperature At boiling point only At all temperatures
Location Throughout the liquid Only at the surface
Speed Fast Slow
Heat source Required May not be direct
